Are Maine Coons Hypoallergenic?

Maine Coons are not typically considered hypoallergenic. While they are known for their luxurious fur and friendly personalities, they still produce the allergens that can affect people with cat allergies. The allergen responsible is a protein called Fel d 1, which is found in cat saliva and skin oils. Since Maine Coons are long-haired, they may shed more, which can lead to more allergens being spread in the environment.

However, some people with mild allergies find that they are able to tolerate Maine Coons better than other breeds, possibly because of their lower levels of dander. It's important to note that individual reactions vary, so spending time with a Maine Coon before deciding to adopt one can help determine if they trigger allergies.
